Light

 1 John 1:7 ESV

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 


I love this verse because it tells us what we should do, but it's also honest that we fail. We should walk in the light. When we don't, the blood of Jesus covers us.

I'm reminded of what Augustine said that I've mentioned before. He said that before he was saved he had his back to the Light and was looking at things the Light reflected on (beautiful women were his main stumbling block). When he trusted in the blood of Jesus shed on his behalf, he came into the Light.

Even our own self righteousness can be something God's Light reflects upon. We need to repent of turning good things into God things, and to trust in God alone for salvation. Only the blood of Jesus can bring us out of the darkness and into the Light.

Coming into the Light isn't some one off event when we pray some mantra of a sinners' prayer. We continue to stray into darkness even as believers and need to keep coming back into the Light of Christ. His sacrifice on our behalf is sufficient.

'Light of the world, please brighten up our lives with your presence, and forgive us for any darkness in our lives. We ask for your glory, amen'.

  Psalm 143:8 ESV Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. What’s the first thing we do when we wake up? Is it to scroll our phones and check our notifications? Or is it to check in with God through His word, without technological distractions? If we trust in the Lord, we ought to long to hear from Him first thing in the morning. We need daily reminders of His unfailing love. His mercies are new every morning, thankfully.  James 1:19 ESV  Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;  As the Turkish proverbs goes, if speaking is silver, listening is golden. Speaking is easy; listening is hard. James calls us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. We have two ears and one mouth. This suggests that we should listen about twice as much as we speak! We have a good record of Jesus's words, but he is the ultimate listener too, to respond appropriately to his hearers. James isn't just telling us to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, or even to seek to emulate Christ. He reminds us that we're brethren. We're adopted into God's family through faith in Jesus.
