 Proverbs 5:9 ESV

lest you give your honour to others and your years to the merciless


I find this verse about sexual immorality personally convicting. My wife married me in part because she thought I had potential. Sadly, I have, thus far, largely squandered that potential.

Yesterday I remembered a testimony that I hope I can emulate. It was a man who worked in a bar and became a Christian. Initially he witnessed of his new faith to everyone in the bar, but then realised it wasn't the best place to work as a Christian.

For us to profess faith in Jesus and to squander our time in sexual immorality is to give our honour to others. The people we commit sexual immorality with don't care that we are giving our honour away. They don't care that we're dishonouring our Lord.

So much time can be wasted chasing a temporary high that we fritter away time that should be devoted to the glory of God and the furtherance of his Kingdom. Instead, we are to redeem the time. As pastor John Piper urges us, Don't Waste Your Life!

'Sovereign Father in heaven, may we always live to honour you and not to waste our time. For we pray in Christ's name, amen'.

 James 1:19 ESV  Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;  As the Turkish proverbs goes, if speaking is silver, listening is golden. Speaking is easy; listening is hard. James calls us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. We have two ears and one mouth. This suggests that we should listen about twice as much as we speak! We have a good record of Jesus's words, but he is the ultimate listener too, to respond appropriately to his hearers. James isn't just telling us to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, or even to seek to emulate Christ. He reminds us that we're brethren. We're adopted into God's family through faith in Jesus. Jeremiah 35:17 ESV In the context, the Rechabites were better at keeping their family traditions than the Jews were at obeying the word of the Lord. God respected the Rechabites nomadic teetotalism. His temper was frayed with His people as a whole however. We don't have to be nomadic. Yet we should remember that this world is not our home, we're just passing through.
