Generations

 so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;
Psalm 78:7 ESV

How should we parent or grandparent? This verse encapsulates some of the most important things we can do. If we set our hope on anything other than God, we're only going to be disappointed.

Hope in God doesn't disappoint because Jesus has defeated death so we can have eternal life. Because Jesus historically rose again, we can rise again in the future. Christ has guaranteed our hope's fulfilment.

We mustn't forget the works of God. Not only did Christ defeat death, but He also went through it on our behalf. We preach Christ crucified: the power of God for all who are being saved.

It's not enough to say we trust in God's works, and fail to work for Him ourselves. Having been saved, we ought to keep His commandments in recognition of their goodness and in thankfulness to God. We are to love Him wholeheartedly and to love one another as we love ourselves.

'Father God, whether we're parents or not, please help us to pass these principles on to subsequent generations: to hope, remember and to work for You. For Your honour we pray, amen'
