Forgetful

And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.

This is like the negative alternative to something Paul tells Timothy. Paul tells Timothy to pass on what he heard from him to faithful men who could entrust the good news to yet another generation. That's four generations impacted by the gospel.

Sadly, the reverse had happened in this verse in Judges. The Israelites were forgetting that God had miraculously delivered them from slavery in Egypt. They became careless of God's goodness to them.

If we trust in Jesus, we're saved from slavery to sin. It's so easy to forget in the busyness of life what God has done for us though. The danger is that we become complacent.

The West is like Israel in the time of the judges. The refrain in that book is that in those days there was no king in Israel, everyone did as they saw fit in their own eyes. What we should be doing is what is right in God's eyes.

'O Lord God Almighty, have mercy upon us we pray for so easily forgetting You. May we always remember Your goodness to us in Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, amen'
