Slavery

I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
Romans 6:19 ESV

Paul used an illustration to help him illustrate what he was trying to explain. We're all slaves, he said, it just depends what we're slaves to. We're either slaves to sin or to righteousness.

By nature, we're slaves to sin. We cannot help but devote ourselves to impurity and lawlessness. That's what we naturally do.

When we're set free by Christ however, we die to sin with Him. Just as He died on the cross, so we die to sin, and rise again to newness of life. In our new life we are to devote ourselves to righteousness.

Having been set free, we're not free to sin. We're dead to that old way of life. Instead, we're free to be good, and so to become sanctified, set apart for God.

'Dear Lord, we're grateful that we're free from sin. May we walk in it no more, instead living for what is right, for the glory of Your name, amen'
