Heart

 Ezekiel 36:26 ESV

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 


The Bible doesn't flatter us. It doesn't tell us to 'follow our hearts'. It teaches that our hearts are deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked, who can understand them?

Thankfully the Bible offers hope. God can perform a spiritual heart transplant upon us. He can transform our hearts from stone to flesh.

True spirituality wouldn't have us squirrelled away in some monk's cell or some ivory tower. God giving us new hearts of flesh means that we become truly alive and most genuinely human when he does his work in us. He can make spiritually dead people alive in him.

As an aside, being 'woke' is a dangerous thing to be. When Jesus healed the blind man, he rebuked the religious people for claiming to have spiritual insight but being blind to him. Christ crucified is a stumbling block to religious people, and foolishness to the wise and learned, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God to make us alive in him. 

'God Almighty, please wake us up to our need of you, and make us alive in Christ. For we ask in his name, amen'.

  Psalm 143:8 ESV Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. What’s the first thing we do when we wake up? Is it to scroll our phones and check our notifications? Or is it to check in with God through His word, without technological distractions? If we trust in the Lord, we ought to long to hear from Him first thing in the morning. We need daily reminders of His unfailing love. His mercies are new every morning, thankfully. Every day, we need God to direct us. We might be in a groove (or a rut!) of regular practices, yet we should be open to being flexible to whatever life throws at us and what God has for us.   Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, I have called to them and they have not answered. Jeremiah 35:17 ESV In the context, the Rechabites were better at keeping their family traditions than the Jews were at obeying the word of the Lord. God respected the Rechabites nomadic teetotalism. His temper was frayed with His people as a whole however. We don't have to be nomadic. Yet we should remember that this world is not our home, we're just passing through.
