Righteousness

 2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.


This verse seems too good to be true. It almost seems blasphemous. If we know ourselves to be sinners, we must be astounded that we can become the righteousness of God.

Even the way God has made us good in his sight is astounding. The Father made the Son to be sin for us. So all our greed, lust, hatefulness, pride etc. was placed upon Jesus on the cross who was killed as the worst of criminals.

Jesus was treated as worthy of hell so that we can be treated by God as worthy of glory. It doesn't really seem fair if we're honest. Yet God in his justice has made a way for us to be saved, through Christ crucified.

I think a lot of our problems stem from having too small a view of both our sinfulness and God's righteousness. If we know how bad we are, it will make us all the more grateful at God's goodness. Praise the Lord for his immeasurable love for us, displayed at the cross of Jesus!

'Our heavenly Father, we praise you for condemning your Son so that we might become your righteousness! Help us to honour you on our lives, for we ask in his name, amen'.

Listen!

  Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, I have called to them and they have not answered. Jeremiah 35:17 ESV In the context, the Rechabites were better at keeping their family traditions than the Jews were at obeying the word of the Lord. God respected the Rechabites nomadic teetotalism. His temper was frayed with His people as a whole however. We don't have to be nomadic. Yet we should remember that this world is not our home, we're just passing through. Listen!

  My God will reject them because they have not listened to him; they shall be wanderers among the nations. Hosea 9:17 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/hos.9.17.ESV Hosea's condemnation of Israel isn't cause for anti-Semitism, but sombre self reflection. If God rejected people who assumed they were His, then we should beware if we're professing Christians. Even if we aren't Christians, but think God is on our side, we should examine ourselves. Do we listen to God? We might not get to hear Him audibly, but we can listen to His word the Bible. Are we listening?
