Father

 Proverbs 23:24 ESV 

  The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. 
 

It's early days even for my eldest daughter at seven, but I greatly rejoice in her and am glad in her. When trying to confess some sin to her and saying I was bad, she replied beautifully. 'Don't say that dad, God made you a wonderful person'. 

 I hadn't taught my daughter Psalm 139, yet out of the mouths of children God has ordained praise. The praise goes to God for making me fearfully and wonderfully. He gets the glory.

Then just the other day my eldest daughter gave me a card she'd made. 'Sorry about the news' (that I'm a bad person) it said, 'but I still love you and give me a hug. God will still look after you' 

Of course, when our children say and do anything like that for us, it melts our hearts. May that gladness and rejoicing translate into an iron will to do the best for our children. May God help us to do so.

'Loving Father God, we praise you for any wisdom and righteousness you've given our children. We give you the glory, and ask for the wisdom and righteousness to parent well. For your honour, amen'.

Confession

  Ezra 10:2 ESV And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel , of the sons of Elam , addressed Ezra : “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.  God's people were at a low ebb. Although they were restored to the promised land, they were still in thrall to their Persian occupiers . Instead of committing to God, they had adulterated themselves with the unbelieving people around them. We might wonder what this has to do with us. Even in the new covenant era , we're commanded not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers . In other words, it's wrong for a Christian to marry a pagan . Ezra had led his people in a powerful prayer of repentance . It seemed to have had the desired effect. The people reacted well, as this verse begins to reveal. Light

 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Isaiah 49:6 As the Lord speaks through Isaiah, his audience shifts from Israel as a whole to his servant, who we will discover is a suffering servant. But this servant has a great calling: to be a light not just to his own people of Israel, but to the whole world. God doesn't want to simply bless one people upon the face of the earth, he wants to bless all peoples of the earth. His means of doing it is through his servant. His servant's first job is to bring back the people of Israel to God, and through them to reach the world. So who is this suffering servant? Isaiah himself served God, and suffered for it.
