Nearness
Psalm 145:18 ESV
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
This reminds me of a similar verse, that all who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. This verse however adds an important caveat. We must call upon him in truth.
We can't take the name of the Lord in vain and expect his nearness and salvation. We can't be disingenuous when approaching the Almighty. We must be wholehearted in our devotion to him.
I sometimes say to agnostic types to try prayer anyway. I tell them to be honest with God about their doubts, but to ask him for the gift of faith. The Lord loves to bless those who are honest with him.
There's no point pretending we're something when we're not. If we're unbelievers, we can be truthful with God that we are. We can ask him to reveal himself to us.
'Lord, please draw near to us, even as we seek to draw near to you. We come in the name of Jesus, amen'.
