Temptation

 Luke 4:13 ESV

And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.


The devil 'threw the book' at Jesus. He tried every trick to make the Lord give in to temptation. He failed dismally.

The secret of Christ's success was to fight temptation with Scripture. This reveals how important it is to know the word of God. 'I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you'.

Like Jesus, we go through seasons of temptation. Sometimes satan attacks us full on. Other times he's more subtle.

Just because Christ passed this test didn't mean to say there wouldn't be more testings along the way. The devil can't be said to not be persistent. We must be more persistent in our faithfulness to the Lord.

'Dear God, please help us through seasons of temptation. May we successfully defend ourselves against satan's attacks. In Jesus' name, amen'.

Light

 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Isaiah 49:6 As the Lord speaks through Isaiah, his audience shifts from Israel as a whole to his servant, who we will discover is a suffering servant. But this servant has a great calling: to be a light not just to his own people of Israel, but to the whole world. God doesn't want to simply bless one people upon the face of the earth, he wants to bless all peoples of the earth. His means of doing it is through his servant. His servant's first job is to bring back the people of Israel to God, and through them to reach the world. So who is this suffering servant? Isaiah himself served God, and suffered for it. Tattoos

  You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord. Leviticus 19:28 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/lev.19.28.ESV It's becoming increasingly popular to have tattoos of Bible verses. I've never yet seen a tattoo of Leviticus 19:28! Leviticus can be hard to unpick: does it matter if we have tattoos nowadays? Tattoos will have been a symbol of pagan unbelief in God the Creator. If tattoos were an improvement to our skin, God will have given us them in the first place. The proliferation of tattoos even amongst professing Christians today illustrates how ungodly the professing Church is, in my opinion. Clearly, we have to contextualise Leviticus. The food laws for example have been abolished by Jesus, when He pronounced all foods to be clean. Yet this verse refers to self harm as well, which we should clearly continue to discourage.
