Summary of the Bible in 66 Days: 40. FulfilmentMatthew
Matthew 1:22 ESV
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
Jesus's first advent didn't happen in a vacuum. Hundreds of old testament prophecies were fulfilled by him 2,000 years ago. The prophet Isaiah promised he'd be born of a virgin. Sure enough, the virgin Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit of God and bore the Son of God.
Even the first woman Eve was promised that her Seed (the virgin born Jesus) would crush the snake (satan's) head. Sure enough, though the devil struck at Jesus by his crucifixion, Christ had the victory. On the third day, he rose again in triumph over death, which is God's curse over us because of our sinfulness.
One of Jesus's nicknames, as foretold by Isaiah, is Immanuel, which means 'God with us'. Jesus isn't just Mary's Son, he's the everlasting Word of God made flesh. He is the One in whom we can be reconciled to Father God.
Isaiah prophesied around seven hundred years before Christ came down to earth. He said that we've all gone astray like sheep. He declared that the Lord has laid upon the suffering servant (Immanuel) the iniquities of us all.
'Heavenly Father, we thank you that our evildoing can be cleansed in the blood of Jesus, the fulfilment of all your promises. May we live for him and his glory, in whose name we pray, amen'.
