Generosity

 Luke 6:38 ESV

give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”


At first glance this verse seems great. It seems to promise that we'll get back what we give. On second consideration however, it doesn't seem to make sense. If we give something, we lose it.

I don't think Jesus is so much on about money and stuff. I think he's on about things like forgiveness and mercy. If we're forgiving and merciful, God will be forgiving and merciful to us.

Let me clarify that I don't think our generosity to others earns God's generosity towards us. Yet if we have truly received God's generosity, we will be generous with others. The evidence of a grateful heart is a generous person.

'With the measure you use it will be measured back to you' is a double edged sword. If we're generous, that reveals that God has been generous to us. If we're stingy, God won't be so generous with us.

'God, forbid that we would be miserly. May we be generous with all that you have given us. For we ask in Jesus' name, amen'.

Light

 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Isaiah 49:6 As the Lord speaks through Isaiah, his audience shifts from Israel as a whole to his servant, who we will discover is a suffering servant. But this servant has a great calling: to be a light not just to his own people of Israel, but to the whole world. God doesn't want to simply bless one people upon the face of the earth, he wants to bless all peoples of the earth. His means of doing it is through his servant. His servant's first job is to bring back the people of Israel to God, and through them to reach the world. So who is this suffering servant? Isaiah himself served God, and suffered for it. Tattoos

  You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord. Leviticus 19:28 ESV https://bible.com/bible/59/lev.19.28.ESV It's becoming increasingly popular to have tattoos of Bible verses. I've never yet seen a tattoo of Leviticus 19:28! Leviticus can be hard to unpick: does it matter if we have tattoos nowadays? Tattoos will have been a symbol of pagan unbelief in God the Creator. If tattoos were an improvement to our skin, God will have given us them in the first place. The proliferation of tattoos even amongst professing Christians today illustrates how ungodly the professing Church is, in my opinion. Clearly, we have to contextualise Leviticus.
