Summary of the Bible: 11. Understanding- 1 Kings
Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?
God gave Solomon a blank check. Solomon didn't ask for riches, long life, or victory over his enemies. Instead, he asked for wisdom to rule God's people.
Some people criticise Solomon for not asking for a closer relationship with God. Yet God's word reveals that God was glad Solomon asked for wisdom. The Lord granted his request.
Solomon wasn't his father David, the man after God's own heart. Yet by the grace of God he was the wisest son of a man who ever lived. Only the everlasting Son of God has surpassed him in wisdom.
We would all do well to echo Solomon's prayer. We might not be responsible for all God's people. Yet we all need wisdom for our lives, and God graciously gives it to those who ask in faith.
'God, please make us 'wise unto salvation' by digging into your word to get to know our Saviour and Lord. In his name, amen'.
