Confession
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
This is the verse mum quoted to me when I was eight and first came to faith in the Lord. I confessed my sins to him, as a proud, self righteous, arrogant religious person. I asked him to forgive me because of Christ crucified.
I have proved the truth of this verse in my life. God is faithful to me. He has been just to punish Christ in my place, for my forgiveness and cleansing.
Note that we don't have to confess our sins to some religious person. We're to primarily confess our sins to God himself. If we renounce them in sincerity, he won't hold them against us.
What's true for me can be true for you. This verse isn't just about getting a bit of religion in our lives. It's about having faith in God to save us, through Christ crucified.
'Lord God, we confess our sins to you and ask that you would prove the truth of this verse in our lives. In Jesus' name, amen'.
