Bread

 John 6:35 ESV

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

This is a strange, powerful, and compelling statement from the Carpenter turned Teacher. He wasn't even a Baker! Even if he was, it's a strange saying to describe yourself as Bread!

Jesus is as essential to life as our staple diets. Apparently Chinese Bibles say he is the rice of life! The thing about Jesus as bread though is that his body was broken like a loaf of bread when he died for us.

Christ went as far as to say that we must eat his flesh and drink his blood to be saved! Was he being some Roman Catholic transubstantiationist? Was he advocating cannibalism?

Of course, Jesus often spoke in metaphors. They have real meanings though. Unless we trust in his body broken and his blood shed on our behalf, we don't have spiritual life.

'Dear Lord, please help us to find the satisfaction and fulfilment that is only found in you. For the honour of your name we pray, amen'.
