The UK's 'Covenant with Death'
'Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement, when the overwhelming whip passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter”; therefore thus says the Lord God , “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’ And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter.” Then your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be beaten down by it. '
Isaiah 28:15-18 ESV
To be honest, in the context, Isaiah was talking about political alliances with the very people who would destroy Israel: the Assyrian Empire. Yet I'm sure it could be applied to the UK's culture of death as well. We have convinced ourselves that when we die we simply become worm food, so who cares if unborn children are murdered and ill people are helped to commit suicide?
We have deluded ourselves that death is freedom. We can do what we like. We think we aren't answerable to our Maker.
God won't let us get away with murder. We're worse than the ancient Canaanites, who the ancient Israelites wiped out as a divine judgement for their infanticide. At least the Canaanites valued life in the sense that they thought child sacrifice would placate their gods.
In the UK, unborn children are seen as accessories, disposable optional extras. If we don't want them, we simply dispose of them. Now we're going to do the same to those at the end of their earthly pilgrimages- assist them to commit suicide as the liabilities we see them as.
May God have mercy upon us. May there be a revival, quiet or otherwise, of faith in him and of the valuing of human life, made in his image and likeness. May there be an awareness of eternity to come, and fear of the Lord that is the beginning of wisdom.
'God, have mercy upon us for our culture of death. May your eternal life be poured out upon countless lost souls before it's too late. In Christ's name, amen'.
