Plots
Then they said, "Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words".
Jeremiah 18:18 ESV
Understandably, Jeremiah was unpopular. He didn't flatter his hearers. He challenged the status quo.
Jeremiah's listeners assumed that everything would be business as usual. They hoped his words wouldn't come true. They wanted their assumptions to be confirmed.
Instead of humbly and repentantly receiving God's word, Jeremiah's contemporaries rejected him. They attacked him verbally. They sought to ignore his warnings.
When we are confronted with God's word, it often challenges us. We shouldn't seek to sweep it under the carpet. Instead, we ought to humbly and obediently respond.
'God, forbid that we would reject Your holy word. May we respond with humble obedience. For the honour of Your name, amen'.
