Door

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

We often might think of this verse in an evangelistic sense. If some unbeliever was to welcome Jesus into their heart, they would enjoy fellowship with Him. That is true, but it's not the primary application of this verse.

This verse was written for a church. The Laodicean church thought they were the bee's knees, but God knew they were spiritually bankrupt. They had all the bells and whistles, the smoke machines and coffee machines and what have you, but they'd left the Lord out.

There's a famous painting by Holman Hunt based on this verse. In it Jesus, the Light of the world, stands outside a door. The door has no outside handle. We must open the door of our hearts to Christ.

I do believe in the sovereignty of God, but I also believe in our responsibility as people to respond in faith to God. We must be open to fellowship with God if we're ever to enjoy it. Otherwise, we'll be lost for eternity.

'Dear Lord, we welcome You into our hearts with grateful thanks for Your willingness to commune with us. We come to You for Your glory and honour, amen'.
