Cord

 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

This is a beloved verse at Christian weddings. Yet when professing Christians are about as likely to divorce as unbelievers, is it even true? We're not just to profess faith in Christ without putting it into practice.

An interpretation of this verse is that God Himself is the third strand in a Christian marriage. Instead of being a twofold cord that's easily broken, we have God to hold us together. It's not enough to just tick 'Christian' on surveys however.

I've heard that Christians who pray together stay together, with statistically few exceptions. If we regularly pray with our spouses, we're consciously weaving a third strand into our relationship: Almighty God. God loves marriage, and He doesn't want to see us fail, so let's call on Him to make our marriages strong!

This verse is realistic: it doesn't rule out the possibility of a threefold cord being broken. Ultimately death ends a marriage relationship. Yet God can empower us to remain faithful until 'death us do part'.

'Father in heaven, we thank You for the gift of marriage and pray that we would invite You into it to keep us strong. Please help us be faithful to one another and to You, for the glory of Your name, amen'

  Psalm 143:8 ESV Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. What’s the first thing we do when we wake up?  James 1:19 ESV  Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;  As the Turkish proverbs goes, if speaking is silver, listening is golden. Speaking is easy; listening is hard. James calls us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. We have two ears and one mouth. This suggests that we should listen about twice as much as we speak! We have a good record of Jesus's words, but he is the ultimate listener too, to respond appropriately to his hearers. James isn't just telling us to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, or even to seek to emulate Christ. He reminds us that we're brethren. We're adopted into God's family through faith in Jesus.
