The Job 31 Man: Introduction

 

Day 1: Introduction 


Before we dive right into Job 31, we need to do some contextualisation. This chapter is the summary of Job's defence in what reads like a courtroom drama. His friends, who are meant to be comforting him in his sufferings, turn his accusers. 


Before we judge Job's 'comforters', what of us? Do we assume that if people suffer, they must somehow deserve it? I must confess that knowing we all deserve God's condemnation, I find myself sympathising somewhat with Job's friends as they wag their fingers at him. 


The thing is though, Job is a man of real integrity: what you see is what you get with him. He was trusting in his Redeemer who was yet to come, the Lord Jesus Christ. Do we trust in Jesus, and if we claim to do so, do we live lives that honour Him? 


Job disproved the idea that if you follow God you will 'live your best life now'. As one Christian rapper says, 'if you're living your best life now, you're heading for hell'. God might have restored to him wealth and family, but the Bible doesn't guarantee us health, wealth or even happiness. 


'Heavenly Father, we come to You for You, for You are worthy. We don't come to You for health, wealth, happiness, or anything else we might idolise. Please help us to worship You whatever our circumstances, for Your glory, amen'

Do you come to God for prosperity? If so, he's not your God, prosperity is! Come to God for His sake, because He's worth it!

Confession

 Ezra 10:2 ESV And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.  God's people were at a low ebb. Although they were restored to the promised land, they were still in thrall to their Persian occupiers. Instead of committing to God, they had adulterated themselves with the unbelieving people around them. We might wonder what this has to do with us. Even in the new covenant era, we're commanded not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. In other words, it's wrong for a Christian to marry a pagan. Forget

 Isaiah 43:18-19 ESV “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. God isn't telling us to have amnesia. He's not telling us to forget his goodness to us in times past. He is in the context telling us to forget our rebellion against him, and the judgement that our sinfulness incurs. Isaiah's audience were rebellious and sinful, just as we are. As such, God would punish them with the rod of his wrath. Babylonia would sweep in to take them captive.  Graciously, God said captivity wasn't the end of the story. He was going to do a new thing. He was going to make a way in the wilderness. This life is a spiritual wilderness. Happily though, Jesus is the way through that wilderness to Father God in glory.
