Mindfulness
Deuteronomy 11:18 ESV
“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
Mindfulness is great, as long as we're mindful of good things. People often assume that the Mosaic law is archaic and questionable. Yet in summary it is to love God wholeheartedly and to love others as we love ourselves.
We're to be mindful of how we can practically demonstrate love in our lives. To be loving starts with our thoughts and impacts our words and actions. We're not just to pay lip service to being loving, but to be enthusiastic about it.
Orthodox Jews take this verse literally. They literally carry verses around with them. I take this verse metaphorically.
King David said he hid God's word in his heart so that he might not sin against him. I think that's what Moses had in mind. We're to hide God's word in our heart so that we might live for him.
'Almighty God, may we ever be mindful of your word, and put it into practice. For your honour and praise we pray, amen'.
