Helmet

He put on righteousness as a breastplate,

and a helmet of salvation on his head;

he put on garments of vengeance for clothing,

and wrapped himself in zeal as a cloak.

Isaiah 59:17

Isaiah 's imagery will be familiar to those who know of Paul's illustration of the armour of God in Ephesians 6. There's a breastplate of righteousness and a helmet of salvation there too. Paul is clearly borrowing Isaiah 's language to make his point.

But Isaiah 's point is different. He's not talking about the people of God here, but God himself. God saw that his people were unrighteous, so his own arm worked salvation for them. Christ was perfectly righteous: impregnably so. If his righteousness is credited to our account we are made so too.

Christ wears a metaphorical helmet of salvation on his head. He is resolved and able to save his people. Satan cannot destroy him. Even when his life was taken from him, he simply took it up again, rising victorious from the grave.

He has garments of vengeance on: he is taking revenge on satan for ruining humanity. Zeal covers him like a cloak: he doesn't save us half heartedly. He is passionate about delivering us from the evil one.

"Lord God, forgive us our unrighteousness. Please act for us in salvation. Thank you that you have done so in Christ. In His name, amen"
