Tears

You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?
Psalm 56:8 ESV

This verse is a beautiful, poetic way of saying that God cares for us very much. As good poetry, there is poetic license, but it communicates a wonderful truth. Not only is God omniscient/all knowing, but He loves us deeply.

I'm sure most of us have had nights where we've tossed and turned. Maybe we've been in physical pain, or maybe it's emotional turmoil we're wrestling with. God knows and cares, and empathises. Jesus has been there, in the garden of Gethsemane.

I don't think God literally has a bottle filled with our tears, but it's good to know that He doesn't turn a blind eye when we get upset. He knows whether our sorrow is godly or whether it's just selfish. He can distinguish between the tears of Esau and Peter for example.

I'm not sure God has a literal book of our tears. Yet He is intimately aware of all of our sorrows (and joys) and He feels for us in them. God isn't some distant, unfeeling force out there in the universe. Jesus reveals Him to be passionate and emotional in the best possible sense of the word.

'Our Heavenly Father, we're so thankful for Your passionate love and care for us in the Lord Jesus Christ. Please comfort us in our sorrows, in His name, amen'
