Captivated

Even in translation from the original Hebrew, this love poetry is beautiful. Amazingly, people often interpret this 'Song of Songs' as being not just about romantic love, but about the 'love of loves': God's divine love for us. When we consider our sinfulness, this is astounding.

We're naturally estranged from God. By nature, we're not into Him. Let even if we were to simply glance as it were and briefly consider our God, it's as though such a consideration would set God's heart beating faster.

It seems almost blasphemous to think of God's love in these terms. Yet too often we're too complacent about the idea that God loves us. It should amaze us that God could love sinful rebels like us.

God's love for us is like the prophet Hosea's love for His adulterous wife Gomer. Eventually, he had to buy her out of sexual slavery. Similarly, God has to buy us out of slavery to sin with the blood of Jesus.

''Dear Father God, we're astounded at Your love for sinners like us. May we delight in You as You deserve, in Christ's name, amen'

Power

But here in this verse, God describes how this anonymous Pharoah has been immortalised in the annals of the Hebrews, so that God is proclaimed in all the earth. The mighty men of the world might think they can stand against God and win, but resistance is futile!  The more stubborn Pharoah was, the more the Lord was able to display His power. Even just earlier in this chapter, Jesus fed 5,000 men, plus women and children miraculously. But when He started making statements like this verse, He understandably became less popular. Basically, Jesus was asking those who would follow Him to go on 'death row'. Following Jesus in 1st Century Roman Palestine wasn't about pressing a button on social media.
