Bread
Give us each day our daily bread,
Luke 11:3 ESV

We tend to think of this verse in terms of our need for God's provision, especially in terms of food, especially in places like the ancient near East where bread is the staple diet. I think Jesus is thinking more widely than just our physical needs however.
As Christ's word says, 'man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' Jesus Himself is the bread of life, the spiritual sustenance we need as well as our physical requirements like food to survive. If we want to survive and thrive spiritually, we need Jesus.
If we went without food for a day, we would survive. If we go without God's word for a day, we survive. Yet in order to truly thrive, we need to regularly feed, not just physically, but spiritually.
Are we feeding healthily? I'm not just on about food. I'm also on about our Internet usage and TV watching habits. More time in God's word will only do us good.
'Sovereign Lord, help us to feed daily on Your word, and so to grow spiritually. May we have a healthy diet of Scripture that we can exercise in our daily lives. In Christ's name we pray, amen'
