River

Then he brought me back to the door of the temple, and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar.
Ezekiel 47:1 ESV

In old testament days, people had to travel to the temple to meet with the living God. Here, Ezekiel has a powerful vision of water pouring forth from the temple and becoming a mighty river. Jesus picked up the image several hundred years later.

Jesus declared that whoever comes to Him will become like a spring of living water. He said this to illustrate the work of His Holy Spirit in our hearts. Our hearts become temples of the Most High God when we trust in Him.

If we claim to belong to God, we ought to reflect the way He refreshes and revives people's hearts. 'Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled'. We can help one another be spiritually satisfied.

One illustration I've heard of believers in Christ is that we're beggars who tell other beggsrs where to find bread. I prefer Ezekiel's illustration here. We become like rivers within a desert, refreshing a thirsty land. We can help to quench people's spiritual thirst, by God's Holy Spirit at work in us.

'Living Lord, please fill us with Your Spirit so that we can be a blessing to others. May we refresh people spiritually. In Jesus' name we pray, amen'
