Remember

Then Moses said to the people, "Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.

Jewish festivals were instituted to encourage God's people to remember His goodness to them. God had delivered them from Egypt with Moses' help, but Moses didn't rest on his laurels. He wanted to make sure God's people remembered His deliverance.

I know we can't all remember the we were born again. Thankfully, I can look back on the 24th of September 1996 with eternal gratitude, for that is the day I came to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This verse makes me think I should mark my 'spiritual birthday' in some more festive way than I do!

For God's new testament people, we tend to come out of slavery to sin and into His Kingdom in dribs and drabs. There's sometimes thousands of us at once. Yet generally, we come to faith individually and become part of an innumerable company of believers.

Maybe we should all, insofar as we can remember, celebrate our spiritual birthdays at least as joyfully as our physical ones. It's one thing to be safely delivered into this world. It's quite another to be guaranteed a place in the new creation!

'O Lord, may we remember You and Your goodness to us in Christ Jesus, in whose name we pray, amen'
