Rejoice!

The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.
Psalm 58:10 ESV

Certain verses in the Psalms, take this one for example, can read uncomfortably. Aren't we to love our enemies? Yes, but that doesn't mean to say we can't pray for their comeuppance!

Of course, we ought to forgive and to show mercy to those who wrong us. We are to bless those who curse us. Yet if they refuse forgiveness, mercy and blessings, they only have God's vengeance to look forward to.

It's not for us to take revenge. That's God's job. He's infinitely better at vengeance than us. When He does give the wicked their comeuppance, we can happily rejoice.

If someone mourns Hitler's death, that would be concerning. If someone is glad when Putin dies, that's understandable. The Lord takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but the righteous understandably rejoice when the wicked are gone.

'Sovereign Lord, may we rejoice at Your perfect justice. We're grateful for Your mercy and righteousness for sinners like us, in Christ's name we pray, amen'
