Fire

 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 4:24 ESV

We might not immediately think of this description of God as positive. After all, who wants to be consumed by a fire? Who wants to be on the receiving end of jealousy?

Fire is powerful, and dangerous. I'm reminded by CS Lewis's description of the Christological lion Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia. Someone asks if he's safe. The answer is no, but he's good. And that makes all the difference.

Jealousy isn't necessarily a negative thing. Spouses should be jealous of each other, otherwise they betray the fact that they don't really care for one another. If someone is indifferent to their partner's affair, it would seem they don't love them.

Jesus loved us enough to die for us. Having done so, He's jealous of us if we run after other spiritual lovers. He demands and deserves to be number one in our lives.

'God, we recognise You as a consuming fire who burns away all that isn't good in us. We acknowledge Your jealousy over us, and ask that we would be jealous for Your glory. In Jesus' name, amen'

Power

 But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.Exodus 9:16 ESVhttps://bible.com/bible/59/exo.9.16.ESV  Secular historians point to the lack of extra-biblical evidence of Hebrew slavery in Egypt and ensuing exodus. But here in this verse, God describes how this anonymous Pharoah has been immortalised in the annals of the Hebrews, so that God is proclaimed in all the earth. The mighty men of the world might think they can stand against God and win, but resistance is futile!  The more stubborn Pharoah was, the more the Lord was able to display His power. Follow!

 And he said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23 ESV Early on in His ministry, Jesus was really popular. Even just earlier in this chapter, Jesus fed 5,000 men, plus women and children miraculously. But when He started making statements like this verse, He understandably became less popular. Basically, Jesus was asking those who would follow Him to go on 'death row'. Following Jesus in 1st Century Roman Palestine wasn't about pressing a button on social media.
