Sun

At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon."

This is a remarkable passage. If we have faith in our all powerful God, it shouldn't surprise us that He made the sun stand still. The Institutor of natural laws like the passage of the sun is perfectly capable of pressing pause on the passage of our star through the universe!

What is even more amazing than God pressing pause on the movement of celestial bodies is that He listened to Joshua. Joshua was busy fighting the evil Canaanites, who were devoted to destruction. He cried out to God to extend the day so that he could have the victory.

Cool story, but what's the application for us? We're in a spiritual battle too, against satan and company for the souls of men, women and children. The war will be wrapped up when Jesus returns.

Of course in one sense we want Jesus to return ASAP, to bring evil to an end and inaugurate the new creation. In another sense however we still have loved ones we want to be saved. I think God will understand if we ask Him to delay until He saves more souls.

'Sovereign God, we acknowlege that nothing is too difficult for You. May You revive Your church and cause a great awakening of souls to You, until Christ returns. For Your honour and praise, amen'
