Stand

Then the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, "Stand up and bless the Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

Jeshua and his company of Levites might only be little more than a footnote in the annals of history, but their prayer is impressive. To bless God we shouldn't just slouch on our sofas. If we met our head of state, we would surely at least stand to attention!

If we would pay respect to earthly powers, how much more to Almighty God! Unlike the worldly powers that be, God is only good all the time. He is worthy of us blessing Him.

God is blessed already. Father Son and Spirit are in blessed unity in joyful delight together. But God loves to be blessed by us too, not because He's an egotist, but because He wants to share His blessedness with us.

Of course, the idea that mere mortals like us can bless the Lord of eternity is surprising. However, He delights to condescend to our level: after all, that's what Christ did in His first advent.

'Almighty Lord, we bless Your holy name, which is far above all the praise and honour we could give it. Thank You that You condescend to hear and bless our worship, in Christ's name, amen'
